What is my motive?

Motive

I should point out that there is value in doing the right thing even if our motives are not entirely pure (which they will never be in this lifetime). I’m certainly not saying that one should sit on the sidelines until something can be done with perfect motives.

Beyond the Gospel

Moving beyond the gospel?

In some churches I have attended, there is a sense that the gospel entails the elementary teaching of Christianity. To move toward maturity then requires that people move beyond the gospel into more “meaty” doctrinal teaching.

I have come to realize that this is wrong headed and leads not to maturity, but to immaturity. The effect of this teaching is the exact opposite of the desired result.

On beauty and worship

While I enjoyed touring the churches, my visits were a mixed bag for me. For example, one of the more disconcerting things that I encountered was a commemortive to Charles Darwin in Westminster Abbey. I hope that I will not offend anyone when I say this, but for me Westminster Abbey was more museum than house of worship. I was awed by the rich history of England as I toured, but little about what I saw around me pointed me to worship of God

Do not be anxious

The problem is that often I don’t even realize that I am getting anxious. In those times, I lose sight of what is really important in the press of the urgent stuff around me.

Clinging to the rope

We are kept by a power not our own! Praise God that we don’t have to figure everything out. All we have to do is cling to Jesus.

Sabbath

On the Command to Keep the Sabbath

A Christian understanding of keeping the Sabbath should involve rest, assembling together for worship and instruction and doing good works for the benefit of others.
