Encourage One Another

Sometimes we try to encourage someone and the encouragement we are trying to deliver feels like condemnation or worse to the one we encourage. I can think of three reasons why this may be the case.

Whether it is by personality or by training, or some combination of both, I like to have rules to assist in making decisions. But one thing we learn from the gospels is that Jesus often didn’t play by the conventional rules and sometimes it is difficult to discern if a rule is from God (and inviolable) or from man (and can be ignored).

Clouds as a metaphor

As I sat on that balcony, I could see that in a few moments the clouds would pass and blue sky and sunshine would return. As with the clouds which hide the sun for relatively short periods of time and then dissipate, the trials of life are not permanent and will likewise dissipate

In 21st Century America, we are unlikely to encounter anyone who is tempted to erect a statue to the goddess Felicity. Yet, we are in danger of worshipping felicity. Happiness seems to be the primary goal of many we interact with on a daily basis.

Ending Well

From this, I conclude that the secret that will allow us to end well is to be constantly reminded of our own tendency to go off track. We need a realization of our complete dependence upon God for anything good to come from our labors.
