How Chick-fil-A baffled the PR pundits

Chick-fil-A

A recent USAToday article expressed surprise about the lack of impact the boycott of Chick-fil-A produced. I offer some thoughts on why the boycott failed.

Ideas have consequences

The root of many church problems is that leaders feel that it is their responsibility to build the church. Christ himself told us that it is His responsibility and His alone. We are not in the driver’s seat. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus plainly told us, “I will build my church.”

How do we choose our heroes?

Rather than desiring to do big things for God, perhaps we should just focus on being obedient in the small things and let God worry about the rest. We can be encouraged in this obedience by the example of Joseph.

No Bullies

Rev. Emily C. Heath: Jesus, Bullies on the Bus and the Rest of Us

Rev. Heath published a piece in the Huffington Post which purports to give a Christian response to bullies. I have two points of challenge for Rev. Heath. One based on something she didn’t say and one based on something she did say.

Motive

What is my motive?

I should point out that there is value in doing the right thing even if our motives are not entirely pure (which they will never be in this lifetime). I’m certainly not saying that one should sit on the sidelines until something can be done with perfect motives.

So that I will not experience pain . . .

A while back, there was a book that was very popular in Christian circles that centered on this verse. I remember reading it but I didn’t find it very helpful or encouraging. The promise of that book (as I recall) was that if I prayed that prayer with the proper sincerity, like Jabez, I would not experience pain.
