Preaching with impact

Preaching doesn’t need to be flashy or entertaining to be effective. Here are some thoughts on which preachers have made an impact on me and why.

Quantity versus Quality

My guess is that most Christians would agree that reading Scripture is a good thing. The fact that the Bible is a perennial best seller lends credence to this.

But what is the best way to read it? Should I keep to a reading schedule or take a little bit at a time. Do I want to focus on the quantity or the quality of my reading?

Whose way is blameless?

It was not until I was pretty far into adulthood that I really began to understand that perfect obedience is not the standard. Jesus came to do for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Shepherd vs. Leader

This is, after all, what the word pastor means. A pastor is a shepherd, or at least, is supposed to be a shepherd. Shepherds care for their flock, not just as a group, but as individuals.

The counter-cultural church

Whether or not we have the support of the current Pharaoh, Prime Minister or President, the church is called to be countercultural.

These verses should inform our idea of what it means to be salt in the world. Do we work for economic justice? Do we work for social justice? Do we work to bring physical and spiritual healing to those we encounter? Do we proclaim the good news of Jesus?
