After the brute force of Hurricane Sandy subsided, I had some time to reflect on what had just happened. I offer four observations in response to Sandy.

Prayer – Pitfalls to avoid

In Matthew 6, Jesus gives us two pitfalls to avoid when praying: 1. Don’t pray to impress the people around you. 2. Don’t use meaningless repetition

On the value of doctrine

Perhaps we should hit the pause button and stop to think about what kind of disciples we are making. We would do well to remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 7.

What massive stones?

So whether it is a seemingly indestructible temple that falls or a seemingly perennial institution like Sears or a beautiful old church that goes away, we don’t have to have our confidence shaken.

Upside Down

When Jesus gathered his disciples for the last time before his death, something unexpected happened.

When treated like a servant . . .

The bottom line is that I don’t need to be validated by others when I am a servant of Jesus Christ, because Jesus gives me the ultimate status as a child of God.
