Which are wheat and which are tares?

Wheat and Tares

My experience is that sometimes there are people who have come to faith in such a gradual way, that it may be difficult to distinguish wheat from tares. What if the delay is not to only protect the wheat but to allow the harvesters to more accurately identify the tares.

On bread, fish and urban ministry

I thought of a little boy who was going to a church meeting carrying his lunch. It was about two thousand years ago when Jesus was teaching the crowds and the disciples came to Jesus suggesting that he disperse the crowd so that they don’t pass out from hunger. Jesus took that boy’s lunch of bread and fish and multiplied it so that everyone could eat.

Touching the leper

Touching the leper

We need to emulate both Jesus and the leper in this story. We emulate the leper by coming to Jesus as the only means of curing our spiritual disease. We emulate Jesus by being the conduit for Jesus to show his love to others who are in desperate need of it.

Man on treadmill

Love – not busyness or programs

Paul prayed that the Philippians’ love might abound. He did not pray for busyness or programs to abound. Maybe we need to re-think our church life.

More than I can handle

More than I can handle

One of the Christian platitudes that I find most irritating is “God will not give you more than you can handle.” Try telling that to Gideon and the 300 men with him as they moved toward a battle with the entire Midian army. Try telling that to Job who, in addition to experiencing the loss of health, wealth and family, had to endure the empty and sometimes harsh words of his so-called friends.

Add or Subtract

Don’t add or subtract

Moses warned the Israelites to not add or subtract from the commands of Scripture. We would do well to heed this warning. How does this apply to us in 2013?
