Home Bible Reflection With humility comes wisdom

With humility comes wisdom

This morning I read a proverb which says,

When arrogance comes, disgrace follows,
but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 11:2 (CSB)

It is 2020, a presidential election year in the United States. Occasionally, my phone will notify me that there are Tweets to which I should pay attention. I am always frustrated when I do because of the tone of the political discourse that always seems to find its way into my feed.

The one thing that so much of the discussion on the internet and social media lacks is humility and if the proverb referenced above is true, it then also lacks wisdom.

I cringe at some of the things that get said by those in our highest office. My frustration is not limited to our current President. His predecessor, from the other party, was no better in this regard. And it is likely that whoever gets elected this fall will bring little, if any, improvement.

The lack of humility that we see displayed might be blamed on the nature of the process. One does not win debates, and sadly, perhaps does not win votes by deferring to others. The whole process is dependent upon self-promotion and defamation of one’s opponent. A survey of advertisements for candidates for both parties at all levels of government reveals that self-promotion and vicious attacks are the normal methods employed.

But, in the midst of all the rancor, I am reminded that one day, a King who will return and take over who was described this way during his first appearance:

“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”

Matthew 21:5 (ESV)

May that day be soon . . .

Apathy and Ignorance in the Church

Tony Campolo is famous (infamous?) for the following statement: “I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a sh–. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact that I […]

Blue Spruce Seedling

Growth in trees or believers

The Observation I walked through our yard yesterday to check out the 25 Colorado Blue Spruce trees I planted a few weeks ago. They were bare root seedlings similar to what is shown in the picture to the left. I was looking at the trees to see if I could observe any growth. Bare root […]

Listen for the whisper

1 Kings 19 records the time when the prophet Elijah hit rock bottom. It got so bad that Elijah hid in a cave, thinking he was the only worshipper of God left. God confronted Elijah and suggested he go out to “stand on the mountain in the LORD’s presence.” The author of 1 Kings records […]

Heart

The Goal of Christian Teaching – Love From a Pure Heart

Confused About the Goal In Matthew 22:37-39 and Mark 12:29-31, Jesus tells us that the two great commands are to love God with our entire being and love our neighbors. The concept is simple but the execution is difficult. Only two commands and if we’re honest, we admit that we cannot keep either one of […]

What Joseph teaches me about Thanksgiving

Genesis 41 records the story of how how Joseph responded when he was presented to Pharaoh. Even though Joseph was sold out by his brothers and falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, even though he spent years in slavery and prison, even though he had good reason to think that God had abandoned him, Joseph wastes […]
