How dare we?

It is hard to condemn others when we understand that flaws and rebellion are deeply seated in our own hearts and we all have need to God’s grace which has been extended to us through Jesus Christ.

On the nature of the church

Human institutions must put their continuance as a very high if not the highest, priority. They must promote the organization’s welfare over the benefit of one of the members. Members who don’t contribute to the institution’s success are forced out for the good of the entire group.

On wineskins, graves, garlic, leeks and onions

When a new work is started, the newness brings with it a level of discomfort. We often refer to the old system as tried-and-true, even if the results were less than optimal. The danger is that the new work will be hobbled by those who are determined to force the new work into the old pattern. I have seen this tendency in industry and I’ve seen it in the church.

Wheat and Tares

Don’t be surprised by the tares

I’m writing this because a good friend of mine is struggling to recover from the betrayal that this pastor in a real church in a real city represents. I have a mixture of sadness and a tinge of anger in response to this situation. In praying and thinking about this, I was reminded about the parable of the tares.

A Quest for More

David Henderson on the self

Because God no longer occupies center stage, terms like self-love, self-expression, self-confidence, and delf-fulfillment, none of which graces the pages fo the Scriptures, begin to dominate the church’s conversation. Meanwhile other “self” words straight from the Bible like self-surrender, self-sacrifice, self-denial, and self-control slip into disuse.

Amazing Grace

Good news . . . bad news

I have some really good news and some (sort of) bad news.

Love and Holiness

Even a cursory acquaintance with the Bible gives us the idea that as Christians, we are called to live holy lives. Scripture validates our feeling that things are not quite as they ought to be. There is no doubt that Christians are called to pursue holiness.
