Beware the leaven . . . thoughts on contemplative prayer

Contemplative prayer has become a hot topic. My concern is that by applying labels and generalities we miss an opportunity to learn and grow. The danger is that we throw out the wheat along with the chaff.

Doubt

The core of doubt

Jesus said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31) This phrase has often been interpreted as a rebuke of all doubt. The understanding is that Jesus is telling Peter that it was wrong to doubt, the inference being that all doubt is wrong. Is this the correct understanding?

Saint Augustine

On going back to Egypt

The point is that it is easy to look back on different situations and remember them as better than they really were. It is also easy to lose sight of the fact that God remains in control and promises to use every circumstance in which we find ourselves for his glory and our benefit (Rom. 8:28). It is easy to let our circumstances drive us to complaining rather than worship.

On Abuse of Power

This should be instructive to use as we look as to how the church should be structured. We have too many examples of how celebrity pastors have gone astray by assuming power that was never theirs to assume.
