Defend the faith

The culture surrounding the church is no longer supportive of her mission. As a result, we need to train members to defend their faith. We especially need to equip the youth in the church to understand what they believe and why they should believe it. We, as the church, have the truth of Jesus Christ. If it is the truth, it will be able to stand up in the marketplace of ideas.

Preaching doesn’t need to be flashy or entertaining to be effective. Here are some thoughts on which preachers have made an impact on me and why.

It is precisely because Jesus died and rose again that I can have hope to be other than I am. For what could I pray if there was no hope that my sin has been conquered? For what could I pray if Jesus did not rise and demonstrate that sin and death are vanquished? What hope have I without the Cross and the empty tomb?

As church leaders we must keep in mind whose is the responsibility to build the church. It is not the pastor’s responsibility. It is not the elders’ responsibility. It is not the preacher’s responsibility. It is Christ’s and Christ’s alone (Matthew 16:18).
