Why I write Attempts at Honesty

Labor of Love

We have gotten a decent amount of traffic so it appears that people are getting something out of reading these posts. With new readers discovering the blog all the time, I felt that it was necessary to articulate some thoughts about why I keep up the blog and some items that are not reasons that I do it.

A Real Sense of Community

Community

A few days ago I read a story about a man with 100,000 Twitter followers who took his own life. I know nothing about his history or the reasons behind the suicide. But I am struck by sadness that none of the 100,000 “friends” was close enough to prevent this tragedy. I often hear that […]

It Ain’t About the Numbers – 6 Thoughts Toward Staying on Track

Numbers

I have found that in having an on-line presence, it is easy to get caught up in a numbers game. How many followers do I have? How may hits have there been on the blog? What is my blog ranking? In our connected world, we have what seems like an infinite supply of data at […]

Lightning Bugs, Smiles and a Loving Creator

I woke up early this morning and looked out the window. The lightning bugs (fireflies for those of you who live outside of Pennsylvania) were putting on a spectacular show. There were more flashes than a Super Bowl halftime show, without the old guys singing or wardrobe malfunctions. I am thankful that our Creator made […]

Live with the end in mind?

I recently got a tweet which said, “Live with the end in mind but remember it’s the journey that matters in the end.” Without thinking, we might ingest this statement and think it says something helpful. Yet, it is not the journey that matters in the end. A pleasant journey to a wrong destination is […]

Bridge over white water

A Bridge and not a Wall

God does not always choose to work within the boundaries of our established traditions. Traditions can be helpful as a point of reference, but they can also be shackles that keep us from effectively engaging the culture around us. When our tradition ceases being a bridge and becomes a wall, it is longer contributing to the purpose of the church.

Amazed

Why are you amazed?

I can read about miracles in the Bible and not be amazed. The flannel graph presentations of my youth have made the stories so familiar that too often I do not connect with how radical the events actually were. This healing should amaze me but its familiarity masks how marvelous it really is.

Why I Hate Religion – Reaction to a Reaction

A poem recorded on video entitled “Why I Hate Religion” has become very popular on YouTube. The video is well done and asks some important questions. A response to the video by Kevin DeYoung sparks some dialog about some points made in the poem. Watch the video, read Kevin DeYoung’s response and offer comment on this post. But most of all examine the claims of Jesus Christ.
