Labor of Love

We have gotten a decent amount of traffic so it appears that people are getting something out of reading these posts. With new readers discovering the blog all the time, I felt that it was necessary to articulate some thoughts about why I keep up the blog and some items that are not reasons that I do it.

A Real Sense of Community

Community

A few days ago I read a story about a man with 100,000 Twitter followers who took his own life. I know nothing about his history or the reasons behind the suicide. But I am struck by sadness that none of the 100,000 “friends” was close enough to prevent this tragedy. I often hear that […]

It Ain’t About the Numbers – 6 Thoughts Toward Staying on Track

Numbers

I have found that in having an on-line presence, it is easy to get caught up in a numbers game. How many followers do I have? How may hits have there been on the blog? What is my blog ranking? In our connected world, we have what seems like an infinite supply of data at […]

Walking worthy

It is not wrong to encourage someone to “walk worthy of the Lord” as long as we understand that the “worthy” is determined by God and is gauged by the internal and not the external reality. This verse is not a club to be used to bash people into conformity to a list of do’s and don’ts. It is not to be wielded in this way to squelch behaviors that make us feel uncomfortable.

Nebuchadnezzar

Choose To Be A Servant: Example of Nebuchadnezzar

Nebuchadnezzar had been an eyewitness to several miracles, yet he remained proud and self-reliant. In this section of Daniel 4 we see that God reduced him from his throne to eating grass in the field like a wild animal. Nebuchadnezzar was taken from being arguably the most powerful man in the world to a homeless madman.

Springsteen

No retreat baby and no surrender – Inspired by Bruce Springsteen

The Bruce Springsteen song “No Surrender” inspired some thoughts about what is worthy of such dogged pursuit by the believer. See what the Apostle Paul and C. S. Lewis have to say in relation to this.

Every Good Endeavor

Every good endeavor

“If the God of the Bible exists, and there is a True Reality beneath and behind this one, and this life is not the only life, then every good endeavor, even the simplest ones, pursued in response to God’s calling, can matter forever. That is what the Christian faith promises.” Tim Keller in Every Good […]

Checklist

A checklist for the church

In looking at all of these questions, I realize that there is a gap between my behavior and my belief. I believe in God’s love, I know that I am forgiven, I know that God is in control and I know that I have received and am to give grace. Yet, I do not always live according to that knowledge.
